The new coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, responsible for the disease COVID-19, has caused more than 493 million cases worldwide and more than 6.1 million deaths to date, according to the independent count by Johns Hopkins University. , which monitors the situation of the coronavirus with the general data of all the countries of the world since the beginning of the pandemic.
The world exceeded 300 million infections at the beginning of January 2022 and in just one month it added another hundred million at a frenetic rate of more than three million daily cases on average, figures never seen before in the pandemic, due to the expansion of the omicron variant throughout the planet.
The United States is the country with the highest death toll, with more than 982,000 deaths; followed by Brazil, with more than 660,000; and India, with more than 521,000 dead.
This is how the number of cases and deaths in the world evolves.
Situation Summary
One year after the start of the pandemic, at the end of January 2021, the world reached 100 million infections. Twelve months later another 300 million were added, the last 100 in just over four weeks. The country with the most infections in absolute terms continues to be the United States, followed by India and Brazil.
New cases of COVID have been reduced for the second consecutive week, with a decrease of 16% in the period from March 28 to April 3 compared to the previous one, according to the latest report from the World Health Organization. Similarly, weekly deaths are down 43% from the previous week. A drastic drop that the WHO attributes to an artificial rebound caused by the adjustments in the figures of some countries in the previous weeks.
Although it seems that the series is stabilizing, these data should continue to be interpreted with caution, since several countries -including Spain- are making progressive changes in their detection strategies. This “produces a lower number of tests and, consequently, less detection,” says the agency.
By country, South Korea is the territory that reports the most new cases for the second consecutive week (2 million), followed by Germany (1.3 million), France (959,000), Vietnam (796,000 million) and Italy (486,000). However, all these countries are down compared to the previous week.
As for deaths, Germany reports more than 1,500 deaths and is the only country that reports the most deaths in which the figure grows compared to the previous week. For its part, the United States is the territory with the most deaths in the last seven days (4,435), followed by Russia (2,357), South Korea (2,336), the aforementioned Germany and Brazil (1,436).
